How to Install a Wordpress Blog using cPanel
By edwood
The 5 Simple Steps to Installing a Blog
If you're someone who hates installing scripts -- or setting up databases -- you might have come to the conclusion that installing a Wordpress blog on your own website is more hassle than it's worth.
Fortunately, you'd be wrong!
If your webhosting account includes a cPanel interface -- which most do -- then installing a blog on your site is EASY. In fact, even if you're a complete novice, it takes just a few minutes to complete the process.
Just follow these steps...
Step 1
Log in to the cPanel account for your website. Usually, the URL for your cPanel will looking like this: http://www.YOURWEBSITE.com:2082 (Basically, just type your domain URL and add :2082 at the end.)
If your cPanel isn't located at this URL, check the 'welcome' email you received from your webhost to get the correct address or, failing that, contact their support to get it.
Step 2
Once logged in to your cPanel, scroll down to the Software/Services section and click on the blue smiley face that says "Fantastico De Luxe"
Step 3
On the 'Fantastico' page, click Wordpress on the left-side navigation bar. This will take you to the main Wordpress installation page. Now click New installation.
Step 4
now we've arrived at the most complicated-looking part of the blog installation. Fortunately, as you'll see, it's really not complicated at all.
Here are the details...
Install on Domain: If you've installed a subdomain (for example subdomain.yourdomain.com) that you want to put the blog in, you can select it here. Otherwise, just leave this as it is.
Install in directory: Basically, you have two options here. If your blog is to be the main home page of your site (for example http://www.YOUR-WEBSITE.com), just leave this field blank. On the other hand, if you want the blog to be contained in a sub-folder, enter the name of that folder here.
For example, let's say you want your blog to be at http://www.YOUR-WEBSITE.com/blog then just enter blog in the field provided.
Admin access data: This is the username and password you want to use when you log into your blog administration area. (Again, just to emphasize: this is NOT your cPanel -- it's separate login details you're creating just to access the blog admin.)
The username can be anything you want. As for the password, be sure to make it complex. Make it a mix of numbers with upper- and lower-case letters. You should also include a few symbols such as }^(=.*~?!% and so on. Also, make it at least 10 characters long. (And don't forget to note it down somewhere safe!)
Base configuration: This is all pretty unimportant for now -- and it can be changed later, but for what it's worth...
Admin nickname: Just put in whatever you want to be called in the admin area when you log in. (May as well just put your first name.)
Admin e-mail: This isn't displayed publicly anywhere and is only for use behind the scenes. For example, if you decide you want to receive email notification when someone leaves a comment on your blog, this is where the notification will be sent. Again, you can change this later if you want.
Site name: Joe's Business Blog... or whatever.
Description: Where Joe shares his business secrets... or whatever.
Now just click the "Install Wordpress" button.
Step 5
On the next page you'll be given the chance to verify where your blog will be installed. Now, just click the "Finish installation" button -- and wait a few moments as Fantastico does its stuff.
Once the installation is complete, you'll see a paragraph like this...
You need a username and a password to enter the admin area. Your username is yourusername. Your password is yourpassword. The full URL to the admin area (Bookmark this!): http://www.YOURWEBSITE.com/wp-admin/
That last link, is where you go to log in to your new blog's admin area.
Congratulations, you've just installed your first Wordpress blog!
Now, all you have to do is log in to your admin area and start customizing your blog (by adding a nice theme, for example) and then start posting.
All the best,
Michael
